Lake Koocanusa is one of many damns located in British Colombia known for its great fishing spots and beautiful scenery. Picture yourself sitting on the shore soaking in the warm heat waves of the sun while looking out into the unreal Rocky Mountains and greenery sitting all around you.
Families swim around in the clear glassy water that is surrounded by tall pine trees that fill your senses with the almost bitter-sweet smell of pine lifting in the breeze. Getting away from the loud city roar and being here is a getaway you shouldn’t pass up.
Being here is like a dream, the mountains look like simulations of the perfect place on earth with ridged edges that somehow always move their way up to a tip where the mountain stops and although imperfect match up with all the other rocky figures that are around.
The lake feels like a magical place when you see the white-tailed deer prance and the bald eagle swoop down on its prey in a way like no other. The humming sound of birds surrounds you as you sit with your feet touching the soft and silky sand beneath you while you look into the water without a worry in your head.
From the shore looking out to the water boats the size of whales slowly make their way to the spot of the water that is as still as can be where they then stop and lower their large ankers set up their fishing gear and slowly catch the small kokanees that you see jump up to the surface when the water bugs land. After a while the boats disperse and make their way back to the docks and the waves slowly make their way to the shoreline where you are sitting. The smell of freshly cooked fish follows within a few hours from the catch from the fisherman and the dinner for their families.
After a long day by the water in the hot environment, you make your way back up to the campsites that they have available and get all cozy back at your home away from home where you set up a folding chair. It gets dark fast up by the lake, but the best part is watching the sun slowly hide behind the big mountains and the moon creeping out from the tree clearing just behind where you set up camp. Above you the big glowing stars that are hard to see in the city but here they are clear as ice and shine as bright as fresh snow.
Sitting in these areas is the best feeling and you rarely want to leave the perfect surroundings of nature that you have.
